Overnight Connections through Kolkata: Bagdogra, Port Blair and the Northeast on the Morning Flights
Kolkata is the hub for eastern India: the flights to Bagdogra, Port Blair and the Northeast cluster in the early morning, and the flights that feed them arrive the night before. For the traveller connecting from Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore or Delhi to Darjeeling, the Andamans or Guwahati, the connection is a night, and it is spent at or near this airport. This guide explains how the connection works in the one-terminal building, how much time each kind needs, and which hotel fits which gap, as of September 2026.
The early-morning departures
Bagdogra (for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim and the Dooars), Port Blair, Guwahati, Agartala, Imphal, Aizawl, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Dimapur, Shillong and Lilabari are all served from Kolkata, mostly by IndiGo, Air India Express, Alliance Air, SpiceJet and Akasa, and the first wave leaves between about 5:30 am and 8:00 am so that the aircraft can turn around for the day. Bagdogra, Guwahati, Agartala and Port Blair are among the airport’s ten busiest domestic routes. Meanwhile Emirates, flydubai, Etihad, Air Arabia and Qatar Airways from the Gulf, and Thai, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and IndiGo from Southeast Asia, land through the evening and into the small hours, and the last flights from Delhi and Mumbai arrive after 10 pm. A same-night connection is rarely possible, so most travellers spend the night at or near the airport.
Domestic to domestic
Kolkata has one terminal with one domestic security hold area, so a domestic-to-domestic connection on a single ticket with bags checked through is a matter of staying airside and finding the gate; the airline’s minimum connection time applies. On separate tickets, which is common when combining a low-cost carrier with Alliance Air or a Bagdogra fare bought late, you land, collect bags in the arrivals hall, walk out and along the forecourt to the domestic departures entrance, and check in again on the ground floor at least 90 minutes before departure, then re-clear security. Two hours is enough off peak; make it three between 6 am and 9 am, when the hall is at its fullest. Our terminal guide describes the building.
International to domestic
There is no airside transfer between the international and domestic hold areas. Every international arrival clears immigration, which takes 30 minutes on a quiet evening and 90 when the Gulf flights bunch, collects bags, passes customs and comes out into the common arrivals hall. From there the domestic check-in counters are on the same ground floor, a few minutes’ walk, and you check in again 90 minutes before departure and go through domestic security. Three hours is the practical minimum. Foreign nationals must hold a valid Indian visa or e-Visa to enter, since the connection is landside, and should complete the e-Visa online days before travelling.
Which hotel for which gap
Under five hours, stay in the terminal: the AAI retiring rooms on the mezzanine, ₹700 to ₹1,500 plus GST, are covered in the sleeping in the airport guide. Five to nine hours, the Holiday Inn Express across Jessore Road, ten minutes on foot, with its six-hour package or a night rate and a Grab and Go breakfast for a 6 am departure. A full night with a family, the Holiday Inn Kolkata Airport in Rajarhat with its pool and kids-eat-free dinner, 10 to 15 minutes by cab, or the cheaper Howard Johnson with its 24-hour coffee shop. A night and a day, when the Andamans ferry or the Sikkim permit means a later start, the New Town pool hotels: Novotel, Fairfield and Westin, 20 to 25 minutes by cab. The day rooms guide has the short-stay arithmetic.
Tips
Buy the morning flight on the same ticket as the inbound where you can, so a delay is the airline’s problem. If the tickets are separate, do not book a Bagdogra or Port Blair departure before 8 am off an international arrival after 11 pm; the immigration queue and a retiring room that turns out to be full will eat the margin. Check whether your onward airline flies from the domestic or international side (all the Northeast and Andaman flights are domestic). Keep the permit paperwork for Sikkim and the restricted areas of the Northeast in hand luggage. And book the return cab to the airport for 4 am the night before; the hotel transfers guide explains why.
