Kolkata Airport Day Rooms and Short Stays: Retiring Rooms, the Six-Hour Hotel Package and Hourly Options
A day room at Kolkata Airport comes in two forms: the airport’s own retiring rooms on the mezzanine, cheap and unbookable, and the Holiday Inn Express across the road, which sells six hours of a real hotel room. Neither needs a cab, both are within ten minutes of the gates, and between them they cover most gaps between flights. The New Town hotels sell day use too, but the cab each way eats into the hours. The options are compared below, followed by the deciding question: how much gap you actually have. Checked in September 2026.
Retiring rooms in the terminal
The Airports Authority of India runs retiring rooms and dormitories on the mezzanine level of the terminal for air transit passengers with an onward ticket within 24 hours. A double-bedded room for a couple and children under 12 is ₹1,500 plus GST, a single bed on a sharing basis ₹1,000 plus GST and a dormitory bed ₹700 plus GST, each charged as a 24-hour block whether you use four hours or twenty. Rooms are allotted first come first served at the airport manager’s office near Gate 3C and cannot be booked ahead; they are basic, air-conditioned and have showers. For a domestic gap of four to eight hours they are the cheapest bed in the city and the only one that needs no security re-screening on the way back, since they are landside. The sleeping in the airport guide has more on what they are like.
Holiday Inn Express six-hour package
The Holiday Inn Express Kolkata Airport is 800 metres from the departure gates across Jessore Road and sells a six-hour stay package for travellers between flights, booked directly by email or phone rather than on booking sites. You get a proper room with a walk-in shower, the free Express Start breakfast if your hours overlap 6:30 am to 10:30 am, the 24-hour gym and free Wi-Fi. Walk it in ten minutes with hand luggage, or take an app cab for five minutes with a family and bags. It is the best option for a gap of five to nine hours, and for a family it is worth the difference over the retiring rooms.
Day use at the Rajarhat and New Town hotels
The Holiday Inn Kolkata Airport, Howard Johnson, Fairfield, Novotel and Westin are overnight hotels first, but all take day-use bookings through the Indian hourly-booking apps and some by phone, usually for a fixed block of hours at a discount on the night rate. Add the cab: 10 to 15 minutes each way to Rajarhat, 20 to 25 to New Town, plus the wait, so count on 90 minutes of travel in a day-use booking there. They make sense for a gap of nine hours or more, when the pool matters, or when a late arrival and an early flight leave a night too short to be worth paying full rate for.
How much gap you need
Kolkata has one terminal, which keeps the timings simple. For a domestic-to-domestic connection on separate tickets, collect your bags, leave the arrivals hall, and be back at domestic check-in 90 minutes before departure; a four-hour gap gives you two hours in a retiring room, a five-hour gap two and a half at the Express. For an international arrival, immigration and customs take 30 to 90 minutes depending on the hour, and you must be back three hours before an international departure or two before a domestic one, so an international-to-international gap of seven hours yields about two hours across the road, and nine hours yields a useful half day in Rajarhat. The terminal guide and the overnight connections guide cover the connection routine in detail.
Tips
Ask for a retiring room the moment you land; they fill when the evening international flights arrive. Book the Express package before you fly, by email, since the hotel confirms it manually. Keep your onward boarding pass to hand for the AAI staff. And if the gap is under four hours, stay airside: the Travel Club lounges in the lounges guide are the better use of the time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book a room at Kolkata Airport for a few hours?
Inside the terminal, the AAI retiring rooms take transit passengers for up to 24 hours, charged as a 24-hour block, on a first come first served basis. Across the road, the Holiday Inn Express sells a six-hour stay package booked directly with the hotel. The Rajarhat and New Town hotels sell day-use rates through hourly-booking apps and sometimes by phone, but they are overnight hotels first.
How long a gap do I need to use a day room at Kolkata Airport?
For a domestic connection, four hours is enough for the retiring rooms and five for the Holiday Inn Express, allowing an hour each way for walking, security and queues. For an international arrival you must clear immigration and customs to leave, and be back three hours before an international departure, so seven hours is the practical minimum for the Express and nine for a Rajarhat hotel.
Which is cheaper, a retiring room or a hotel day room?
The retiring rooms: ₹700 plus GST for a dormitory bed, ₹1,000 plus GST for a single bed on a sharing basis and ₹1,500 plus GST for a family double room, against a hotel package that costs a good part of a night's rate. The hotel gives you a private bathroom, breakfast, quiet and a guaranteed booking; the retiring rooms cannot be reserved.
Are there sleeping pods at Kolkata Airport?
Hourly nap pods have operated near the domestic gates in recent years, but the operator and availability change and we could not confirm them for September 2026. Ask at the information desk after security; do not plan around them.
